Please welcome John Ferguson as a part of our staff at ROC. He has answered a few questions for us to help our students get to know him a little better. John has been an assistant instructor at ROC for quite some time.
What year did you first start practicing physical fitness or martial arts training?
I would say I started in 1986 when I joined the Army. After I got out in 97, due to injuries, I looked for something like karate. After some life changes and moves I ended up in Danville. Here I found ROC Marital Arts. I started there in 2013.
Was there any particular reason you started practicing martial arts?
I would watch karate movies wishing I could do what they did. I WAS a victim of bulling and abuse. I want to be able to protect myself and others in my situation.
Favorite form and why?
I do not have a favorite, per say. I like the art of being able to use your body in ways of self-defense without weapons.
Why do you currently practice this style of martial arts?
I have looked at other styles, some appealed to me some did not. I had three that I narrowed it down to. The instructor, Sensi Felicia, is what drew me in. She was up front about her expectations and wanted to know mine. The environment that she created suited my way to effectively learn.
What do you love about teaching martial arts, kickboxing, or fitness?
I never would have dreamed that I would be helping teach martial arts. It scares me and it thrills me at the same time to be able to help others. Helping others to become a better version of themselves; see them grow into a confident person, mentally, physically, spiritually, is most humbling for me.
Two things most people don’t know about you?
1. I was bullied for a long time beyond school.
2. I absolutely love the Siberian Tiger. It is the largest cat at over 670lbs
